Website Spring Cleaning: 6 tips to update your online presence

Learn why now is a good time to update your website—and how

Be honest: how much spring cleaning did you do this year? Have you cleaned out your gutters, swept out the pantry, organized your closets?

What about your company website? Doesn’t it deserve a fresh start?

The truth is that websites are living, breathing things. And living, breathing things need care.

That’s why spring is a great time to refresh your website and get the metaphorical dust out of its corner.

Read on for my top 6 tips for updating your website:

1. Clean WordPress

So how do you update your website? At the most basic level, update WordPress.

WordPress is software and all software needs to be updated regularly to keep it secure and running smoothly.

Aside from keeping WordPress updated, any plugins you might be using should also be kept up to date. It’s also a good idea to regularly check for broken links and remove any media you’re not using.

Depending on your technical skills, this might be easier said than done. Never start tinkering with your site’s backend unless you’re familiar with WordPress and have reliable backups (it doesn’t hurt to know what to do with those backups if you ever need them). .

Luckily, if you work with a reputable web development agency, they can handle the basic maintenance of your website for you.

If you don’t have regular maintenance, it might be a good idea to contact your web designer and have them update every month.

2. Update website content

The text and images on your website are your branding to the world, and your home page needs to be particularly compelling or visitors won’t resonate that they’ve come to the right place.

So, is your website content painting exactly the right picture that will lead to leads and sales? Are you getting the conversions you want?

Luckily, changing the text on your website is one of the easiest changes you can make. Remember, copy is king in the online world. If it’s not well written, it won’t inspire much confidence in your potential customers or move them to action.

Tidying up your website can be as simple as changing a few headlines or maybe updating your current special offers. For example, our client A Bear and Bison Inn regularly updates the specials and packages they offer (and don’t they look tempting?).

3. Give it an updated look

I bet you look around your house with the eye of an amateur decorator. You probably no longer use high-pile carpets or the dusty pastel wallpaper so popular in the 80s.

In fact, I bet you’re constantly tweaking the look of your home—a new carpet here, updated curtains there—to keep it fresh and modern.

You need to keep that same critical eye on your website. Does it look like other sites you like? Does it look like it was built this year… or 5 years ago or even longer?

Keep in mind that online trends move much faster than any other type of trend. Because of this, it is generally recommended that you refresh your website about every 3 years to ensure it is up to date with current best practices.

So harness that spring energy to make your website look and feel contemporary and appealing for today’s market.

4. Add a blog…or update your blog!

A blog is the perfect way to keep your website copy fresh and new. Also, Google really rewards websites that keep posting new content.

Additionally, blog posts are a great way to connect with your customers and show off your expertise. And they can serve as social media posts and content for your newsletters.

For example, we love how our client Malary’s created a fashion show blog post to showcase their latest spring fashion. It’s timely content worth sharing and the perfect way to showcase their products.

So if you really want to refresh your website, consider adding a blog section. You can call it your “blog”, “article”, “stories” or whatever else fits your brand (note that we file ours under “Resources”).

It is important that you have your own area on your website where you can regularly publish new content.

And if you already have a blog, now is a good time to update it! Posting once a week is ideal, but even once a month will pay off over time.

5. And an eNewsletter signup

Hopefully you already have an email list because it is one of the most important marketing assets any business can have. Regular newsletters are one of the best ways to keep in touch with your potential customers.

But do you have a simple email list signup form on your website? And does it have a tempting offer?

The reality is that visitors who visit your website for the first time may not become customers immediately. The best way to convert them into customers is to collect their emails so you can build rapport and build trust.

That’s why you want to make it as easy as possible for website visitors to join your list. If you don’t have an eNewsletter signup form on your site, contact your web developer to add one.

Not sure which service to choose? We have a list of recommended newsletter service providers on our website for you to consider.

And if you have one, do you get as many signups as you want? Perhaps it’s time to either change your opt-in offer or consider changing the current wording or placement.

6. Make sure your site is shareable

Most websites created today have links to your social media platforms. It’s still a good idea to check them out from time to time to see if they’re still working.

But since we’re giving your site a makeover, take another look at the social media features on your site. Sure, you may have links to your social platforms.

But are you making it easy for other people to share your content?

Think about adding social media sharing features to your website, especially your blog articles, so people can share them with their followers with just one click. This can create a lot more brand exposure and website traffic.
