Silver bullet, golden goose or magic?

So what does it take to kick-start a business? Should you consider coaching or is there an alternative to soul bareness?

• Do you want more profit from your business?

• Do you want the business to be easier and less stressful?

• Do you want your customers to be happier?

• Do you want to build your organization?

• Would you like someone else to take the load?

• Do you want to use the holiday season?

• Would you like to work fewer hours?

• Do you want to choose when you want to work?

• Would you like some time to plan your goals for the future?

• Do you want to determine your own destiny?

Business is always changing; What with new techniques and guidelines to help you get better, be happier, more focused and whatnot, but to the majority it just doesn’t make sense. So much effort and too little reward. Take a minute to think about why you started in the first place. Your dreams, ambitions and goals seemed almost within reach, but why has it become so long, so technical? Business was easier but to be competitive now the business owner has to be versatile and very competent. If not, he/she is destined to endure a frustrating business life.

Work practices, internet, technology, PR and marketing, and sales all require significant awareness.

Work practices now include:

• Home workers

• Remote workers

• Networked offices

Marketing and PR:

• Web

• PR News

• Blogs

• ezines

• Search engine optimization

• Web pages

• eBooks

• Internet chat

• Video

Sale:

• Telecommunications

• VoIP

• Software, CRM

• Contact Centers

All of the above practices require a newfound integrated knowledge of technology and technique, one cannot function properly without the other.

Many people don’t realize that search engine optimization can have an impact on the number of people you talk to over the internet, not just browsers, or that a company can expand its expertise by employing people in other countries while it retains its current location in its country of origin, even phone calls can be transferred anywhere in the world for free. The borders are broken and now there are none.

To compete we must all use the resources our competition has at our disposal, but “the most creative” wins. Today we must understand that this is the technology that will prevail and support our success. We all need to make sure the systems we use work together and can be used to our advantage. This must be the overriding factor that all companies should strive for.

Technology is designed to make our lives easier and help us make money. Most businesses have a website, a PBX, and a PC network. With a few adjustments, any business can be helped to thrive. The ability is to combine technology to create a business process and succeed as a manager and motivator of people.

Typical coaching

Business, Executive and Corporate Coaching has grown into a multi-million pound industry over the last 10 years. It is possible to have coaching sessions at work, at home or even in vacation destinations and some not as welcoming as boot camps. But still, coaching is here to stay. But does typical coaching mean admitting defeat, or does it mean you’re ready to take your business to the next level?

In any case, the business owner has to reveal a lot of information about himself and his company during coaching. This represents the situation that the problems prevailing in the company are primarily due to the personality of the owner and his business acumen.

business systems

Perhaps personalities are why the business is struggling, but there’s one important factor that’s never looked at or checked, and that’s technology. This is mainly due to the lack of expertise in this area, and by that I mean a combined awareness of technology and its impact on business processes.

Every businessman or woman is expected to be aware of all the connotations and implications of technology, regardless of their education. To make matters worse, many companies are downright embarrassed not to buy new technology, and the usual excuse is that the company is too busy or can’t bother researching new devices. This negative relationship between “business and technology” will persist because there is no explicit correlation between the trade-offs between business processes and technology processes. The problem seems to start quite early in life, ie at school. IT studies and business studies are two separate GCSE qualifications, but in reality the overlap is immense.

One only has to look at the role of the IT manager; His job description states that he should ensure the smooth operation of IT systems etc. It doesn’t mean he has to come up with financial solutions to business problems, nor does he have to redefine the organization’s business processes to increase profitability, if that were the case, the IT manager would be running the business! I accept that large organizations may have IT directors who are capable of taking on such a task, but smaller companies typically do not have staff capable of such a task simply due to inexperience.

We believe that before a company decides to engage the services of a business, executive or corporate coach, it should first review its technology. There are many good reasons for this, but perhaps the most important is that the emotional strain of admitting or accepting that there is a personal problem is difficult to manage.

Technology knows no feelings!

When a company can be confident that its technology is working at the optimal level along with productivity and performance, this can be a great opportunity to take your business to a new level through a dedicated executive or business coach. Consider the following:

• Not replying to an email within two hours can cost a business £18,000 a year, according to Vodafone.

• Home workers 21% more productive than office workers.

• Technology training increases knowledge by 21%, minimizes errors and saves approximately 1 hour per day.

• Integrated solutions ie CRM, phone systems and contact software can increase productivity by up to 100%+.

The statistics on the return on investment in technology and training are endless, but the only person the businessman needs to rely on for advice and information is that of a salesperson selling their product for their goals!

Over the years, a mutual distrust has developed between those who know and those who need to know, ie the seller and the customer. Because of this distrust, the business owner is reluctant to explore the possibilities of the technology because (a) nobody has enough experience or time and (b) the seller is not believed.

There needs to be a general change in the way providers approach things. While this would be difficult at first, there is a win-win scenario. The buyer can see the benefits and the seller increases their exposure stats (meaning the more people present them, the more likely they are to engage with someone looking to buy).

If no change occurs in the relationship, the long-term effects of poor and uninformed decisions will outweigh them.

It has often been said that the rise of technology is no different or dissimilar to that of the Industrial Revolution, and today that means companies must continue to consider the importance that technology plays in influencing financial results.

Technology performance coaching

As previously mentioned, business owners are expected to understand what technology can do and how to implement and integrate it into a business process. Quite a challenge when there is no training at all. It is a well known fact that training one person is far more effective than simply doing the work for someone else. As such, understanding the benefits of coaching is an important part of business life and is becoming increasingly important.

Before deciding on an approach that includes executive and business coaching, first look for companies that are able to assess your technology infrastructure. A technology coaching organization should be able to offer your organization a formulated and structured approach to assessing systems and their users, combined with supporting recommendations to improve performance and productivity.

It may seem like new age thinking, but a holistic approach to technology is the first step to ensuring excellence. It also makes sure your business processes are in order before you might feel like you need personal coaching.

Creating a work-life balance requires being able to prioritize and manage your workload. If your technology tires you, you will never be able to separate/distinguish between different problems you are having and the factors that can help your business to change.
