What is Microsoft Dynamic Nav?
Microsoft Dynamic Nav is part of the Microsoft Dynamic family, an accounting software for medium-sized businesses, also known as Navision, Microsoft Business Solution: Navision or Navision Attain. Nav is an accounting software package or ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software package.
NAV’s earlier licensing model, “Module Based License” (MBL), lacks functionality, but in 2006 NAV was licensed to use the BRL (Business Ready License) model. Microsoft offers its customers the option to switch from MBL to BRL.
In the BRL license, when purchasing a user session, the customer has access to certain parts of the system. There are typically two types of users (1) Business Essentials (BE) and (2) Advanced Management (AM). Advanced Management is more functional than Business Essential.
NAV has an option that offers the administrators to use a native database or then Microsoft SQL Server for database management. SQL can manage large databases but requires more maintenance than the native database.
NAV has a strong feature set. But more importantly, it can be viewed as an “ERP modular system”. Developers can easily access the development language as Pascal is designed for quick customization of the software. Customers do not need to use complex Transact SQL server-side stored procedures to manage the application and database. This is a new development or modification in NAV.
About 65,000 companies operate the solution with over 1.3 million end user licenses. Approximately 13,000 of these companies are based in the US. It was the first and only midsize ERP application to break 1 million end-user licenses.
NAV utilities are small software modules designed to improve the working comfort and effectiveness of programmers and database administrators. It makes program development and implementation processes faster and their costs lower. First, the NAV developers/implementers (or simply enthusiastic programmers) develop utilities for their own needs and then distribute them as a software product.
