Knuckle Boom Trucks are here to stay

The knuckle boom crane, also known as a loader or articulated crane, is a hydraulically powered articulated arm that attaches to a trailer or truck (thus becoming an knuckle boom truck). The crane, when fitted to the truck, is used for loading/unloading the vehicle. Once the crane’s job is done, its multiple articulated sections (one or more of which may be telescopic) allow it to be neatly and conveniently folded and stowed at the rear of the knuckle boom truck.

The knuckle boom crane folds down to a compact size, but it also has a wide extension range, giving it many advantages over a stiff boom or telescopic crane, such as z and versatility.

Truck and trailer mounted booms such as the knuckle boom truck for hire and sale include (among many others) the Bronto, Nifty, GSR, Ascendant and Aichi which can allow outreaches of up to 32 meters and working heights of up to 62 meters as well as self-propelled aerial work platforms with working heights of up to 22 meters. These cranes can be mounted on the low bed trailer with a cab mounted between the loader and the chassis cab.

Unlike most cranes, the operator has to move around the vehicle to see its load; As a result, modern cranes can be fitted with a portable wired or radio-connected control system to complement the crane-mounted hydraulic control levers.

Often the crane will have some degree of automation and be able to unload or stow itself without direction from an operator. The crane’s versatility is demonstrated by the fact that it can function like a normal straight jib, which can then be folded according to specific needs.

The narrower roads in Europe have contributed to the popularity of Knuckle boom cranes. Traditionally not as popular in North America, these trucks have recently begun to penetrate the reticent audience. As more and more contractors and business owners understand the benefits of these cranes, demand for them has steadily increased.

The increasing popularity of knuckle-boom trucks can also be attributed to the preference of the loader, as well as the fact that using one of the smaller booms eliminates the need for a certified crane operator. The increased global attention means the cranes are more widely available and are currently for sale from a number of vendors. The best-known crane manufacturer is HIAB. As the industry leader in truck-mounted cranes, HIAB is now the world’s best-selling brand of articulated truck-mounted cranes.

The articulated crane truck, also referred to as a clamshell truck, describes a truck that has an articulated loader mounted to its frame, which is used for loading and sometimes towing loads. A grapple loader is defined by ANSI Z245.1 as: a hydromechanical device capable of rotation about an axis, with a grapple or bucket attached to the end of the boom. The forklift has traditionally had a jib crane attached to a vehicle (such as a flatbed truck).
