Integration of Lotus Notes Domino and Microsoft CRM

Well, even if the combination may look very unusual, we see the coexistence of these two systems mainly in large corporations, non-profit organizations. Technically, Lotus Notes Domino has a parallel structure, including the Domino email server. Lotus is extremely flexible and you can program your own CRM or buy CRM for Lotus, however Microsoft CRM has a Microsoft SQL Server database and a very basic sales automation engine. Let’s look at the integration reasons and scenarios. Ensure each special case requires custom programming, tuning and support.

o Why Lotus & MS CRM? There are several reasons to combine both. First – Lotus Domino has a very long history and has been in the market for over 15 years. Enterprises may have a business system built on top of the Lotus Notes Domino platform, and phasing it out is neither desirable nor feasible for reasons of complexity. The second reason is a possible IT strategy to balance multiple platforms to avoid over-reliance on one vendor (e.g. Microsoft). There could also be a licensing issue – if a company has several hundred Lotus licenses – they don’t want to lose them and pay for 200 Microsoft CRM users. In this case MS CRM could be the solution for the sales department and all other departments should stay on Lotus

o Lotus Domino as messaging for MS CRM. There is no need to program this custom part, just use the MS CRM – Lotus Domino connector powered by Alba Spectrum Technologies. It has advanced features compared to the standard MS CRM exchange connector. Instead of using the GUID in the email header, it scans emails with contacts, accounts and leads for a match.

o Lotus workflow. Workflow is possible in Lotus and MS CRM. However, the workflow is most advanced in Lotus. You can use Lotus Workflow and transfer control to Microsoft CRM when complete. This is a typical Microsoft CRM SDK (for programming MS CRM) and Lotus Java Agent programming from Lotus side. Lotus workflow may work with integration to your ERP/Accounting application e.g. B. Microsoft Great Plains, Navision, Axapta, but this is beyond the scope of this article.

o Synchronization of Lotus/CRM activities. One of the most popular requirements is the synchronization of Microsoft CRM activities: appointment, phone call, fax, etc. with Lotus TOTOs. This should allow users to work on the same project and share the data space of Lotus and MS CRM.
