Frequently asked questions about the Domino Connector for Microsoft CRM Lotus Notes

However, Microsoft Business Solutions CRM and IBM Lotus Notes Domino, two groupware products from competing software development leaders, could coexist and even work together within an organization’s computer network. There may be several reasons why companies use both products: licensing, commitment to IBM Lotus Notes as a legacy product, balancing risk – deploying on Microsoft and Java/EJB/J2EE platforms, providing the advanced Lotus workflow to automate document management, etc The need to synchronize MS CRM and Lotus Notes Domino databases is dictated by the ERP market and the connector is available. In this small article we answer the frequently asked questions.

o news. Can MS CRM use Lotus Domino instead of Microsoft Exchange? Yes. MS CRM Lotus Domino connector allows sending messages from MS CRM objects: Lead, Account, Contact and all future objects including sales and service modules

o Outgoing messages. When Microsoft CRM sends emails from Account, Contact, Lead, the connector takes control and sends emails through the Lotus Domino server. It has Java Agent on Lotus side and custom MS CRM SDK item on MS CRM side. If you compare outbound messaging to standard MS CRM Exchange connector, the mechanism is slightly different. Microsoft CRM Exchange Connector inserts the GUID into the message header and uses this GUID to identify the object in the replying email to return and attach to CRM. MS CRM Lotus connector does not use GUID – instead it intelligently scans MS CRM objects (accounts, contacts, leads) in cache

o Incoming messages. When the Lotus Domino server receives emails, the connector’s Java agent side triggers a check with MS CRM to ensure that the addressee’s email address matches the email of a contact, lead, or account. If there is a match, the email is transferred to MS CRM in the form of an email-type activity. Again – please note that the connector does not use a GUID mechanism. We found matching to be a better approach and we have the advanced connector for Microsoft CRM Exchange that works with matching without the standard GUID mechanism.

o Synchronization of Microsoft CRM and Lotus Notes events. Future versions of the connector will synchronize MS CRM and Lotus Notes objects: calendar, appointment, fax, phone call, etc. Please note that Lotus has different objects – we have the matching table, please check with us.

o Lotus and MS CRM versions. Lotus should be version 6.0 or higher. The reason is simple: version 6.0 supports Java Agent technology. MS CRM should be 1.2 or 3.0. Lotus could work on multiple hardware and operating system platforms like Windows Server, AS/400, etc.

o Product prices. The basic package is $3,000 including 30 users, then $75 for each additional user. In Europe, the price is proportional in euros.

o support. The product is installed worldwide and supported in Europe from the German office, in the US and Canada from Houston and Chicago, in South America, Africa, Australia, Asia and New Zealand from the office in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
